Forever French and Les Petits Oignons
Forever French audience cried last night after listening “les petits oignons” from Sidney Bechet. Next to Josephine Baker, Sidney Bechet, clarinetist and saxophonist, was the most beloved African-American performer in France during the 20th century. He was born on May 14, 1897, and died in France on his birthday in 1959. The following is a brief recounting of his life in France. “Les petits oignons ” was no 1 hit in France in 1949.
