Anthony talks to Candace Richards, Archeologist and Curator of the Nicholson Collection, which now features at the University of Sydney’s new museum, The Chau Chak Wing Museum.
The University’s entire collection is now under one roof: The Art Collection , The Macleay and Nicholson Collections.
Candace talks us through the Nicholson Collection beginning with objects from ancient Greece, Rome/Italy, The Middle East and Cyprus with a focus on the Egyptian collection.
We meet Meruah, Padiashaikhet, Horus and Mer-Neith-it-es, who lived in Egypt between 1200 BC and 100 AD.
Fast forward 3200 years later to 1856/57 and we hear about a romantic epoch in Egypt when the then Vice Chancellor, Sir Charles Nicholson, set out from the University, sailing up the Nile, entourage and barge in tow, searching for ancient treasures…
The Australian String Quartet is finally back on the road touring and they perform at the Utzon Room at the Sydney Opera House on Monday June 7.
Paul chats to violinist, Francesca Hiew about their program of quartets by Bartok, Mendelssohn and Pavel Fischer. Bartok (Hungary) and Fischer (Czech Republic) both incorporated folk tunes in their writing almost a century apart. We also hear Mendelssohn’s youthful 1st String Quartet, composed when he was only 20.
