Album of the Week – ‘Bayou Billabong’ by Clayton Doley
‘Bayou Billabong’ by Clayton Doley is Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week.
It’s been some time since fan’s have had the pleasure of hearing a fresh and new body of work from Doley, justifiably lengthy given his hectic international touring schedule as one of the best Hammond Organ players in the world, playing in his own projects as well as supporting the mastery of Bluesman Harry Manx and Texan guitarist Eugene ‘Hideaway’ Bridges, but it’s finally here. Now back in Australia, ‘Bayou Billabong’ is a record reflecting on the past five years of traveling and making music. The eight track original album is a shining amalgamation of Americana and Australiana like only Doley can imagine and deliver. Recorded across two continents and three countries, New Orleans, Louisiana and Sydney, the artist has truly captured the roots of blues music steeped within US history and given it the youthful twenty first century feel of such as young country like Australia. If his musical calibre wasn’t enough to impress you, the album’s artistic line up sure will. Featured artists on the release include past and present members of legendary blues musician Jon Cleary’s band, ‘The Absolute Monster Gents’ as the rhythm section. Added to this is the brass marching band of ‘The Treme Funket’ with members of Galactic and Trombone Shorty’s Orleans Avenue. Also on the line up vocally is Australia’s own Mahalia Barnes, with Jade MacRae and Juanita Tippins alongside virtuoso Didgeridoo player Ganga Giri and lap slide guitar Manx.
