Paddington – a history, Steel – an exhibition

With Esther Hayter

Jack Thompson launches the book

Arts Thursday 7th February 2019.

Paddington has long held a special place in Sydney – with its rows of terraces, cascading downwards from the spine of Oxford Street; its bohemian, artistic reputation and success in battles to retain its distinctive character and vibrant community.

The Paddington Society has long protected the physical character of Paddington – arguing against intrusive-overdevelopment and uniting its community to appreciate and honour the heritage of the place

This Arts Thursday architect Esther Hayter joins Maisy Stapleton to discuss the publication of a comprehensive book on the suburb, initiated by the Society and published by New South Press.

Esther is a long-term resident of Paddington, a member of the Society’s executive and its history committee, which oversaw the book’s development

Paddington – a history is a splendid work, tracing the suburb from its original Aboriginal inhabitants – through maps, illustrations and histories – to its artistic community; and covering the development of the terrace house, the suburb’s social and community history; the conservation of Paddington, its future and landscape form.

Ably edited by Greg Young, the book has 11 chapters and an appendix on the terrace house. The distinguished authors have illuminated the story of Paddington with erudition, perception and wit.

Margaret Hancock Davis

At the Australian Design Centre, a new exhibition from Adelaide’s Jam Factory has just opened.

Steel: art design architecture explores the use of steel by designers across these genres, and the ingenuity and craftsmanship evident in its making.

The Jam Factory’s Senior Curator Margaret Hancock Davis takes us through the genesis of the project and the themes of materiality, sustainability and skill underlying the works presented.

The exhibition opens our eyes to the potential, refinement and diversity of this material and presents an extraordinary range of designs made from steel.

The exhibition is presented at the Australian Design centre until the 3rd April 2019
