This year marks the 5th anniversary of the Sydney World Film Festival which showcases narrative films, documentaries, experimental work and shorts by both cinema masters and rising talents.

The 5-day event will open with a great selection of short films from around the globe: Boxes/Houses by Jessica Vincenza, Appocundria by Mino Capuano, The Traffic Separating Device by Johan Palmgren, Sleep On The Tracks by Jasmin Mozaffari, Flight Of The Lad by Samuel Hutchinson, Farewell Happy Fields by Kyle William Mcdonnell, and Danny & The Bot by Sean Mcferran.

Matteo Bernasconi‘s exhibition Metamorphosis is inspired by the book of Franz Kafka. The work investigates the transformation and the changes that occur in each of us throughout our life span. Metamorphosis can occur at different levels – physically and mentally and is a transformation that provides an escape from a trap that oneself can be caught in.

Matteo’s work explores the human condition; the duality of human nature is a recurring characteristic in his paintings. He shows not only the mere physical appearance, the facade, but he focuses on unveiling something else, unseen. He exposes what the subject is, not just who the subject is.

Early photography at the Australian Museum 1857–1893

The Australian Museum’s newest exhibition, Capturing Nature, will take you back to a time when photography was revolutionising art, science and society.

This original exhibition features beautiful, haunting and sometimes strange specimens of early experimental photography never before revealed to the public.

Taken from the AM’s extensive archival collection of glass plate negatives, the large-format photographic prints showcase the scientific discoveries of museum scientists between the 1850s and 1890s, while also telling the story of the advent of photography in the young colony.

The images range from the initial tentative experiments in the 1850s to the time when photography was becoming an indispensable part of museum practice in the early 1890s. The subjects vary from fish specimens to mammals and megafauna fossils.

With rich, silvery, large-format prints, period cameras and showcasing some of the original skeletons and taxidermied animals featured in the photographs, Capturing Nature brings to life the story of one of humankind’s greatest inventions and a Victorian obsession with immortality.
