NAIDOC Week Badu Gili showcase
Celebrate NAIDOC Week with the Opera House and see the spectacular sails lighting in 4 alternating nightly showings.
To celebrate NAIDOC Week, the Opera House will showcase both chapters of its spectacular sails lighting Badu Gili in 4 alternating nightly showings.
Badu Gili, meaning ‘water light’ in Gadigal language, shares the ancient stories and rich contemporary culture of Australia’s First Nations in a 7-minute animation projected onto the Opera House’s eastern Bennelong sail. The free nightly experience runs year-round at sunset, 7pm, 8pm and 9pm, and is best viewed from the top of the Monumental Steps.

Mum Shirl: Black Saint of Redfern
It is now 21 years since Mum Shirl died, and so a fitting time to celebrate an extraordinary life.
We have an exhibition wholly dedicated to Shirley Smith. It is the second exhibition dedicated to Mum Shirl. The first was back in 2000 when Bronwyn Bancroft, in collaboration with the Mum Shirl Tribute Working Group, curated Mum Shirl, the Sacred Trust of Memory: A Tribute Exhibition in Celebration of the Life of Shirley C. Smith, at Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Cooperative in Annandale. Sixty-nine artists plus five architects contributed works that, through representations or in other ways, honoured qualities the artists saw as intrinsic to Mum Shirl.
Gordon Syron and Elaine Pelot-Syron, both contributors to the Tribute exhibition in 2000, continue to embody these qualities in their work. When Ted Kennedy gave one of the opening talks at the Tribute exhibition, he spoke of Shirley’s work in jails and concluded with a passionate plea for us all to ‘work towards the abolition of all jailing of Aborigines, and so lift an intolerable burden from their shoulders’. Although this bold claim may have fallen on deaf ears it remains the case that art exhibitions can refocus attention on difficult and urgent social values where other media cannot.

Kathryn Wilson: The Secret of Night
Contemporary land, sea and cityscapes.
Kathryn Wilson is a Sydney-based artist.
She has previously worked with a variety of media – primarily oils and mixed media on canvas and paper.
Her current collection explores digital landscape drawing.
Through the depiction of these contemporary land, sea and cityscapes, Kathryn’s work strives to create an emotional response in the viewer.

Koori collection pop-ups at the library
Celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures.
To celebrate NAIDOC Week, City of Sydney Library will showcase our Koori collection. Throughout July, pop-up displays at each library branch will feature some of the collection.
The Koori collection celebrates the rich stories and resources of 40,000 years of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. The books, films, and music in the collection reflect the unique voices and perspectives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Standing at over 2,000 items, the collection covers bush medicine, bush tucker, astronomy, philosophy and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages.
All items are available for members to borrow, and our friendly library team is always keen to chat about the collection.
There’s something for everyone.
The pop-ups are open during branch opening hours.
