A collection of oil and acrylic paintings by Artist Shan Richards. Inspired by the intricacies of the mystic Japanese culture, these vibrant, eclectic works of kaleidoscopic colours shift between ‘worlds’; from complex forms to abstraction, the conscious to subconscious; from the subjective reality of sight to the reality of insight. The significance of the “kaleidoscope” in this work is one that reflects the ‘observations of beautiful forms’, with ever changing combinations. As we Kaleidoscope through life, shifting between worlds, we mentally capture fleeting moments, process and reassemble these mesmerizing flashes. With the use of interchanging intricate forms to abstraction, this work explores the concept of perception. The influences from our memories and past experiences, visually processing information we receive, reacting and redesigning to become our own truths of observation of the world around us.

These artworks focus on a weaving of elements; movement, form, colour and depth, creating multidimensional space that can be interpreted in a variety of ways. They explore a concept of “origami fabrication”, inspired by fabric draping, harmonious, uplifting, saturated colours, and beautiful, exotic landscapes and cultures. The concept of manipulating fabrics into intricate 3D pleated “origami” designs, examines the relationship between the techniques of draping with painting to create depths of illusions. Drawing on this concept, the works experiment with the deconstruction of 3D forms back into a 2D painting, creating these graceful ‘fabricated’ illusions, heightening the effect by applying rich vivid colours. Combining these elements, they create a labyrinth of ideas with the intention of provoking a deeply thoughtful, personal connection.

The Shows
After sold out shows all over Sydney, as well as sold out shows every year at Sydney Fringe since 2015, the 10 Comedians shows are back for this year’s Sydney Fringe.

10 Comedians for $30 is a hilarious line-up of 10 experienced comedians, in a comfortable pub venue, making this the perfect, laugh-filled way to enjoy a night out.

With a diverse range of comedians, this makes an ideal night out for couples or groups. There’s a different line-up of comedians each night, so you can get a unique comedy experience every night.

Early and Late Shows on Fridays and Saturdays

Like last year, on Friday and Saturday nights, the 10 Comedians are putting on early shows and late shows. Check the schedule for details.

The Venue
The Bat & Ball Hotel has an extensive dinner menu, craft beers on tap and a great range of wines and spirits. So you can enjoy dinner at the venue before or during the show. You can even order and pay for your dinner at the bar and have it delivered to your table during the show.

While the 10 Comedians love telling jokes, they are not joking when they say these shows sell out early, so get your tickets ASAP to avoid missing out!

For the exhibition Light Matter, guest curators Yvette Hamilton and Ellen Dahl present recent works by 8 Sydney, lens-based artists. The current democratisation of image-making, where everyone is a photographer, has renewed discussions on artistic authorship and intensified the creative possibilities of lens-based practice.

Dean Cross, Ellen Dahl, Lucas Davidson, Yvette Hamilton, Elena Papanikolakis, Ioulia Terizis, Garry Trinh and Amanda Williams have considered the dynamics between the viewer, the artist and the photographic medium. In their innovative approaches to process and materiality — analogue, digital, hybrid or camera-less — these artists affirm that centrality of the author is definitely not dead.

The Mid-Autumn Festival (aka Moon Festival here in the Southern Hemisphere) is one of the most significant and important holidays in the Chinese calendar and we figured, what better way to celebrate this time of the year than with a gathering of like-minded tea enthusiasts over tea and mooncakes.

Brews of 4 different teas will be paired with 4 types of mooncakes. Teas served will be a mix of Oolong, Black and Pu’er teas, depending on what mooncakes are available. We’ll talk about the myths and legends that surround the Mid-Autumn Festival, chat about the teas being served and ponder the mysteries of life while appreciating the beauty of the full moon.
