The summer edition of the City of Sydney’s biannual Living Colour display is now underway for 8 weeks – featuring more than 100,000 plants.

The designs have been inspired by fashion trends for Summer, Living Colour Summer 2020 will be a floral representation of the catwalk in a stunning visual display.

Patchwork is one of fashion’s latest trends, overlaid to Living Colour it will allow for an eclectic mix of colours, textures and heights. Summer’s colour palette walks off the runway and on to Sydney’s streets, colours of the season are a range of bright and fruity primary colours, supported by pretty pinks and purples, warm oranges and an array of greens. This varied palette allows for a beautiful collection of floral and foliage species.

Plants used will include Begonias, Ornamental Chilli, Parsley, Petunias, Salvia, Sunpatiens, Sunflowers and Vincas.

Installations can be found at Alfred Street, Castlereagh Street, Cathedral Square, Green Square Library, Queens Square, Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre, Springfield Gardens, Kings Cross, Martin Place, Taylor Square, Union Square, QVB and Town Hall.

In the Summer of 2020 Carriageworks presents 4 large-scale installations by leading Australian artists Rebecca Baumann, Daniel Boyd, Kate Mitchell and Reko Rennie.

Each work is immersive, participatory and site-specific, engaging with the unique history and architecture of the Carriageworks precinct. Radiant Flux is Rebecca Baumann’s response to the unique light, space and architecture of Carriageworks.

All Auras Touch is a snapshot of contemporary Australia revealed through human energy fields. Video Works is an immersive composite of 3 major video installations by Sydney-based Kudjala/Gangalu artist Daniel Boyd.

Remember Me is a monumental illuminated work from Kamilaroi artist Reko Rennie, exhibited in the year marking the 250th anniversary of Captain Cook’s first landfall.

Lunar New Year Street Party.

This new event will transform the bustling laneways of Haymarket into an exciting street party with real community spirit on Lunar New Year’s Day.

Entertainment and activities
The streets of Chinatown will buzz with live entertainment, roving performers, face painting, golden Rat robots, kids craft activities, classic carnival games, fabulous food and more!

Enjoy cultural performances by Sydney’s Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian, Taiwanese and Japanese Communities.

Lion dancers
Catch one of 13 lion dancing performances lined up for Lunar Lanes to experience whirling lion dancers weaving in and out of the crowds to thunderous drumming.

From 8.30pm, the electrifying LED lion dancers take their dynamic performance to the streets. A colourful, 10m long, luminous, LED dragon is a sight to behold as it twists and sweeps its way through the festivities.

Dining out
Visit one of the many famed restaurants of Chinatown for a celebratory feast or grab a festival friendly snack from a variety of on-site food trucks or market stalls.

Celebrating The Year of the Rat
Immortalise your experience of the Year of the Rat in Sydney, 2020, by snapping a selfie with a pair of larger-than-life, 2.8m tall, gold metallic rats. A preview of this year’s hero Rat Lantern, these are 2 of 9, fabulous, animatronic rats created by artist Claudia Chan Shaw to feature on a massive tower of industrial cogs.

Inspired by 1950s robots, they have a winding key in their back and spinning Chinese symbols on their chest. The full installation will shine in the sunlight by day and glow golden at night.

More than a million visitors will enjoy the sights, sounds and tastes of Asia when the city comes alive for 16 days with the 2020 Sydney Lunar Festival from 25 January to 9 February.

Two Sicilies explores the experience of early tourism in Anglo cultures.

A line can be drawn from the original Grand Tourists in Italy experiencing the thrill of the (repeated) discovery and excavation of a single temple in Pompeii, to the burial of Australian landscapes and cultures under European names and kitsch facsimiles of other cultures.

By comparing the experience of the exotic as excavation in one place and burial in another, Two Sicilies looks at the way tourism can be a form of colonialism, and pokes fun at some of the more elaborate fantasies and “authentic” experiences of the tourist.
