Laila Ellmoos returns at 10:40 am with Part 5 of Developing Sydney and this week she talks about the Devonshire Street resumption. The land resumed included the Devonshire Street Cemetery and other important buildings surrounding the old graveyard. Developing Sydney is the title of an exhibition Laila was curating at Customs House opening late March 2020. This did not go ahead. However, the exhibition is now online at: https://www.sydneycustomshouse.com.au/visit/exhibitions-events
The exhibition and the series examines Sydney 1900 – 1920 through the archives of photographs in council’s collection. It also marks a new and easier way for us to access the archives. This is the link: https://archives.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au
My special guest at 11:00 am id Helena Ameisen, who tells us her extraordinary love story and marriage, which crossed just about every barrier you can think of. She was a Jewish girl from Sydney, he was a Muslim form Alexandria in Egypt, 17 years her senior and just separated from his wife. Yet it led to a very happy marriage in Alexandria for 18 years until his untimely death.
Music is mostly Egyptian.
