TALL TALES AND TRUE – 15 October 2020

This Arts Thursday join Maisy Stapleton and Paula Towers and our special guests.

Kim Carpenter AO

Our first guest in the studio is acclaimed theatre devisor, director and designer Kim Carpenter.

Kim has spent the Covid lockdown in an intensely creative period, resulting in a series of watercolours of The Happy Prince, Oscar Wilde’s fairy tale of love and sacrifice.

The genesis of the series was Kim Carpenter’s collaboration with choreographer Graeme Murphy to adapt Wilde’s tale for the Australian Ballet. The ballet premiered in Queensland in February, with sets and costumes designed by Kim. It was mooted to play in Sydney and Melbourne, before the pandemic struck.

Kim joins us to speak about the images which have emerged from his close relationship to the ballet and the tale of The Happy Prince. The works are now exhibited at the ARO Gallery on William Street.

Danielle Clode

Today we also speak with award-winning author, biologist and research fellow at Flinders University, Danielle Clode about her book IN SEARCH OF THE WOMAN WHO SAILED THE WORLD.

Published on September 29, Danielle’s work describes how Jeanne Barret, an impoverished peasant from Burgundy, disguised herself as a man and sailed on the 1766 Bougainville voyage as the naturalist’s assistant, becoming the first woman to circumnavigate the world.

Clode’s mission to recount Jeanne’s adventure, took her from France and Mauritius to the Pacific Islands and New Guinea to reveal the previously untold full story of Jeanne’s life as well as the achievements and challenges of her famous voyage.

Music has been selected by Baptiste Cornillier.
