Wolf Mail plays Peter Green

Lazybones Lounge – Friday, 5th February

Peter and the Wolf’ is a well-known symphonic fairy tale written by Sergei Prokofiev, in which a narrator tells a beautiful children’s story while an orchestra illustrates it musically. Wolf Mail’s project ‘Peter and the Wolf‘, recognises the beauty of contributions made by Peter Green to the musical world over the last 55 years. Green was perhaps Britain’s most influential blues guitarist from his time in 1965 as lead guitar with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers when he replaced Eric Clapton.

Peter and the Wolf

No show about Peter Green would be complete without the cathartic “Man of the World” recorded in 1969 being a song about a man who can buy everything he needs, except the love he craves. Around this time, Green was taking amounts of hallucinogenic drugs. He wanted to give all the money away to charity but the others didn’t agree. So he left the band he founded, Fleetwood Mac, in May 1970 and slid into decades of schizophrenia, obscurity, depression and psychiatric therapy.

“A stellar performance, Mail literally transcends Peter Green, not to be missed!”
***** Rolling Stone.

Today, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac is still going strong – Mick Fleetwood recounts in an interview with The Associated Press in 2017 that Green deserves the lion’s share of the credit for the band’s success. Green called his band “Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac” because, as he said, “Well, you know I thought maybe I’d move on at some point and I wanted Mick and John to have a band”.

“Raw and genuine and spontaneous, as close to the real thing as it gets”
Sydney Morning Herald.

After his Peter’s death, Cat Stevens remarked “God bless the ineffable Peter Green, one of the unsung heroes of musical integrity, innovation and spirit. When I heard he left Fleetwood Mac in 1970 to get a real life and donate his wealth to charity, he became something of a model for me”. Green passed away on July 25th 2020 and has left us with a wealth of original material that Wolf splendidly celebrates with “Peter and the Wolf“.
