Musica Viva 2021 Season
The Musica Viva 2021 Season begins with a performance that was due to take place in 2020, when Diana Doherty, the Principal Oboist of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, teams up with her fellow principal chair of the SSO, the cellist Umberto Clerici, together with his collaborators in the Streeton Trio, Emma Jardine and Benjamin Kopp.
Showcasing homegrown talent is central to Musica Viva’s second national tour, when the brilliant pianist Konstantin Shamray is joined by the ANAM Orchestra, led by MSO concertmaster Sophie Rowell.
June sees horn soloist Nicolas Fleury, violinist Emily Sun and pianist Amir Farid join forces for the first time, to tour a program including two of the greatest horn trios ever written, those by Brahms and Mozart.
In late July, Musica Viva will present a collaboration between the recorder virtuoso Genevieve Lacey, together with the harpist Marshall Maguire, entitled ‘Bower’. Lacey originally conceived this as a recording project, when she commissioned five Australian composers to reflect on the effect of the global pandemic. In this version created for the stage, Lacey juxtaposes these new works with existing music from the 14th century onwards.
Queensland Conservatorium’s Ensemble in Residence, Ensemble Q will tour a program featuring Paul Dean’s Concerto for Cello and Wind Quintet in mid-August, highlighting the cellist Trish Dean.
In September, Musica Viva presents another tour due to have taken place in 2020 with performances from long-time friends, colleagues, and collaborators. Piers Lane joins the marvellous Goldner String Quartet to play the music of Dvořák, Korngold, Brahms, Elgar, and a world-premiere by the emerging Australian composer Jakub Jankowski.
The season culminates in a national tour of ‘Chopin’s Piano’, a theatrical performance centred on one of the great monuments of 19th century piano literature, Chopin’s 24 Preludes. Featuring the astonishing pianist Aura Go, an alumna of the Musica Viva FutureMakers program, and directed by Richard Pyros, this is a staged presentation based on Paul Kildea’s non-fiction book of the same name.
