from Tina Havelock Stevens’ exhibition ‘Nature Extemporise’ at Substation
For today’s show I thought I’d continue along the lines of the show I did 2 weeks ago (2 September) where I reached out to some creative friends and colleagues to ask them:
- what’s keeping you busy?
- what are you doing to keep afloat/sane?
- what music have you been listening to, what would you like me to play & why?
I had some fabulous chats and played some great tunes.
Todays guests were:
James Bradley – award winning author, essayist and critic. James musical choice was The Rolling Stones – Winter from Goats Head Soup. He also mentioned the Plastic Ono Band and Chrissie Hynde doing Bob Dylan covers, so I played them too. So good! Check out his recent essays for The Monthly on alternative treatments of PTSD and depression using MDMA and psychedelics here.
Next up, Mark Mordue – poet, editor, journalist and author of Boy on Fire: The Young Nick Cave. Mark also works for Addison Rd Community Organisation and spoke a little about the Addi Road Food Pantry. They are doing such great work helping people in need and reducing food waste at the same time. Mark chose Sam Fender – Seventeen Going Under and because he’s been also listening to some old favourites I also played T-Rex – Jeepster from Electric Warrior 1971.
As I’m keeping the chair warm for the usual Arts Thursday team, I thought it would be good to check in with Maisy Stapleton – who is based in the Southern Highlands at the moment and can’t make it into the studio. She also requested a tune from her past, Fine Young Cannibals. I played Good Thing from The Raw & The Cooked 1988.
Finally, I chatted to interdisciplinary artist & musician Tina Havelock Stevens – another artist who has installed an exhibition Nature Extemporise (at Substation) that’s currently closed due to lockdown. She chose a song by Kevin Morby that she’s been listening to on high rotation – I have been to the mountain from Singing Saw – 2016.
