Flickerfest returns to the Bondi Pavilion

Flickerfest at Bondi Pavilion

It must be summer because it’s time for Flickerfest at the Bondi Pavilion, with 114 short films on offer over the 10 day festival (January 20-29). Whether it’s comedy, drama, documentary, films for kids, LGBTQIA+, romance or even short films that defy classification, this festival has something for all tastes.

Festival Director, Bronwyn Kidd, gives us an overview of the amazing selection in this year’s screenings.

From over 3000 entries, 64 Australian films are officially selected for the Best of Australian Competition, 37 International films in the Best of International Competition and 13 Documentaries across the Best of Documentary Competition. A further 80 films will also feature across Flickerfest showcase sessions.

One of the reasons the competition is so tight is because the winners in each category will be eligible for entry into the Academy Awards. There is also a category, FlickerUp, for young filmmakers under 18 and Rainbow Shorts Competition featuring the best LGBTQI+ films.

The Diamond (Flickerfest 2023)

In it’s 32nd year, daytime screenings will be held in the newly refurbished theatre upstairs. (Check out the 1920’s murals on the rear wall that were uncovered during the renovation.) Nighttime sessions will be held in the courtyard under the stars, but wet weather will move these sessions into the theatre.

After the Bondi season a selection of films will tour Australia at over 50 venues around the country.
