Betwixt + Tash York’s Happy Hour (Bondi Festival)
It’s the final few days of the Bondi Festival and the excitement keeps building. After nearly two weeks of singing, dance, theatre, comedy, burlesque and cabaret, the last acts are warming up and getting their makeup and frocks ready for showtime.
This week we preview Tash York’s Happy Hour. Tash is on a mission to bring happiness to her audiences, sometimes by challenging their beliefs and behaviour, but mostly through song and a jolly good laugh. As a celebrated cabaret artist, Tash is set to thrill you more than a half-priced wine list.
Supported by her backing band, The Red Wines, (Peppy Smears & Vivian Fonteyn), expect powerful three-part harmonies, hilarious true stories, improvised numbers and of course Australia’s favourite game – Goon of Fortune.
Season runs Thu 13 – Sat 15 July 8:15pm Sun 16 July 6:30pm
We also chat to Wanida Serce about her Brisbane based street-dance collective, Pink Matter. Their commitment to gender empowerment through music, dance and style is on display in their new work, Betwixt.
The show highlights the stories of five top street dancers and infuses the dance with spoken word performed by 2021 Australian Poetry Slam Champion, young African poet, Huda Fadlelmawla.
Wanida’s impressive CV includes the Commonwealth Games, Special Olympics and Australia’s Got Talent. She explains the difference between vogueing and krump styles of street dance and is also offering workshops in street dance and in spoken word as part of the Bondi Festival.
