ARTS WEDNESDAY 13 APRIL 2011

Jane Raffan will join me for Now Showing at approximately 9:45 am and at about 10:10 am, Lindie Ward, Curator of Lace and Textiles at the Powerhouse Museum presents Part Four of the history of lace.  Lindie takes over from Rosemary Shepherd and will present the second three episodes.

My special guests in the studio this week at 10:30 am are the members of the Volatinsky Trio, Anatoli, Lucy and Stephen and their instruments include the cimbalom, the domra and the cello. Stephen has even promised to bring his domra into the studio with him! Two of them – and guess which two – were completely unknown to me but I was entranced by their sound and intrigued by their history. The music the trio plays shows influences  from the traditions of Balkan, Russian & Ukrainian music to the Caucasus and touches of Manouche gypsy swing and ball-musette. The music is composed but with improvisation playing a major part. So, do join us in a journey of musical history and tradition, along with some very exciting music!

As you are all aware, Global Rhythms happens this Saturday at Robertson Park in Watsons Bay an at about 11:15 am our own Katarina Skoumbas will join me for the latest update on the event. And I’ll bookend the music on the show with tracks by the talents artists who’ll be performing for you – Macho Mambo and the Tango Saloon.

As always I look forward to your company!
