Counterrevolutionary Cheesecakes (August 8, 6pm – 6.30pm )

The adjective, “counterrevolutionary”, pertains to movements that would restore the state of affairs, or the principles, that prevailed during a prerevolutionary era…food for thought!

As the ‘pinup’ is once again made picture perfect – we reflect on Our Aussie Pinups of the 40’s and 50’s!

Are we promoting an era of opression or just gently romancing with the past ? For some, reliving mid-century culture is a way of life!

Known then, and even now as “Cheesecakes” for being  “better than cheesecake” …..pinup girls were an important part of our war time history…they provided a sense of hope – there was something back home worth fighting for and to come home to.

Now we live in relative security – but the modern day pinup is staging a comeback! Is this counter-revolutionary – why is it happening and what is it all about in these times?

Even your presenter has fallen for the nostalgia – having a retro make-over, thanks to Tony Vacher of Sterling and whatabigcamera.com. Entering Miss Pinup Australia, this reporter understands the subject from the point of view of being viewed as a pinup – it’s a beautiful thing to imagine yourself admired – cheeky – caught by surprise in a moment of indulgence.

What is it that makes us want to cosplay the 40’s and 50’s? Is it that we now have all the choice and freedoms we want – so we can revert to what we see as beauty – perhaps even as respect of women – showing them in a light other than how we see them in such media as Ralph magazine? Or is it a guenuine love of vintage culture, fashion and societal values (sans opression)?

On Between the Covers we will hear from Madeliene Hamilton, author of Our Girls. She is soon to be seen on the SBS series  SEX – but for our questions and understanding – she will join us on Between the Covers, Monday, August 8, 6pm – 6.30pm – as we explore her book and the idea of the modern day pinup!
