Fringe Festival’s Newtown Theatre Programme

For the second year in a row, Newtown Theatre and the Sydney Fringe are joining forces to bring you the best of performance innovation, imagination and fresh new talent unafraid to push the boundaries of art.

Highlights on offer this year:

  • The Moving Picture Show: a silent film extravaganza accompanied by a live 12-piece orchestra. This one’s an unmissable event. Watch the magic of flickering vintage imagery to the music of Australia’s finest players. And if you need to stretch your legs? Well, you can always join the Flapper Parade interlude!

  • Complicated Creatures: a multimedia cabaret brought to you by musical wunderkind Martyn Badoui. Badoui’s show is a celebration of those who dare to live on the margins of society, He sings about the Artist, the Prophet, the Lonely, the Beautiful, and the Complicated.

  • Bite Size: brought to you by Ipan Theatre, this production features several delectable 10-minute plays brought to you by emerging female playwrights exploring the theme ‘Things are not what they seem’.

  • The Day The Sky turned Black: fresh from acclaimed seasons at the Edinburgh, Adelaide and New York Fringe Festivals, Ali Kennedy Scott performs poignant stories of everyday heroes who fought the Black Saturday bushfires, one of Australia’s greatest natural disasters. Inspired by interviews with survivors, journalists and a global arson expert, these stories show the courage and strength of the human spirit when pitted against Mother Nature at her worst.

  • The Dysfunctional Project: Swinging between the tragic and the comic, this is a new work exploring the psychological effects of male sexual dysfunction. This work reveals the vulnerabilities of masculinity as it travels between the experiences of 5 “broken men” in an entertaining and heartfelt journey brought to you by acclaimed physical theatre artist Paul Morrison.
