Buy Nothing New In October

The Buy Nothing New initiative is all about conscientious consumption. It isn’t alluding to never buying anything ever again, it’s just providing us with the situattion to wise up about what we are buying buy giving up purchasing for one month. The basic principle is that we should know where all of our “stuff”comes from and where it will end up. People can use this time to reassess what they really need vs the sustainability of our world.
Of course they are not suggesting that you give up food and hygiene, just the non essentials such as new clothes or accessories etc. Thus encouraging a revamp of your existing wardrobe with your old Singer or Janome; even perhaps a swap meet witt your closest group of friends

Hopefully at the very least you will end up with some extra cash by the end of the month.

Why not even make it official on the pledge page to give yourself a challenge.

The Festival of Dangerous Ideas

In its third year, Festival of Dangerous Ideas aims to provoke thought, encourage debate and maybe enrage the audience just a bit. Located at the Sydney Opera House, the Festival of Dangerous Ideas features a wide range of topics that are confronting, uncomfortable and taboo. No topic seems to go too far for this festival but in fact appears to be the criteria for inclusion in the program.

Some of the more controversial debates include:

The necessity of tortture

Wikileaks

Psycopaths make the world go around

Gays & Lesbians Don’t Belong In the Classroom

This year’s festival features a list of speakers including Jonathan Safran Foer, author of Everything is Illuminated, Julian Assange of Wikileaks fame and Lisa Pryor, author of A Small Book of Drugs.

East Coast Theatre Company

Witth a recent revamp, the ECTC aims to creating true and lasting connections with the local community.

The ECTC already has a rich history in providing innovative theatrical works to the Sydney community and it is now offering a drama workshop for young members of the community.

European Day of Languages

Kids Art Exhibition – Waverly Library

As a part of the celebrations for “European Day of Languages”, students studying European languages around Sydney were invited to participate in a a Competition titled “Europe 2050”. The theme encapsuated various ideas such as food, cities, monuments and people and could be presented in any dimention of artistic expression. The results of the competition is in the form of an exhibition in which 200 works are featured from students aged five to twelve years.
