Origami – The Blues Of Joy

Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week is The Blues Of Joy by Origami.

The Origami trio consists of Melbourne based musicians Adam Simmons on alto sax, Howard Cairns on double bass and Anthony Baker on drums.

The three musicians formed the trio to experiment within the boundaries of jazz music. The name Origami itself spawned from the trio’s take on music and it’s similarities to the Japanese art. Starting from a simple beginning like a sheet of paper, pieces of great complexity and beauty are then created.

The Blues Of Joy is the debut release from the group. Ethereal and original, this is Jazz outside the box with depth and contrast. At times their sound is dreamy and slow, the title track for example, and their covers of Outkast’s ‘Hey Ya’ and Snow Patrol’s ‘Chasing Cars’. However where The Blues Of Joy excels and really comes to the fore is in Origami’s darker and edgier compositions; particularly in ‘Chimera’ where a melancholic tension profusely emanates and the restless ‘Morse Code’.

Great attention to detail has been taken on the whole concept of the album, from the name of the trio, to the depth of the compositions but perhaps most beautifully and delicately with the hand-folded case that the CD is wrapped in.

The Blues Of Joy is a release by Fat Rain & The Listen Hear Collective. For more information go to their website at www.listenhearcollective.com
