Musical Odysseys of the Far East

Café Carnivale
presents two amazing acts in a magical collaboration at Eastside Arts, Paddington. “Musical Odysseys of the Far East” is on Friday 4th November at 8.15pm. This unique event brings together for the first time musicians from various Eastern cultures, with their music taking you on a mystical journey deep into the spiritual heart of their respective homelands.

Bukhchuluun Ganburged (Bukhu) is a master student of the Music and Dance Conservatory of Ulaanbaatar of Mongolia. A cultural ambassador of his country, Bukhu combines virtuosic Morin Khurr (Horse Head Fiddle) and Khoomii (Harmonic Overtone Throat Singing) skills to transmit the harmony of Mongolian Shamanic culture through time and space. In a Café Carnivale first he performs in collaboration with the Nayika Group, featuring Indu Balachandran (Karnatic vocalist) and Sivakumar Sethupathi (South Indian drummer). Evocative of the steppes of Mongolia, Bukhu’s throat singing enhances and complements Nayika’s Karnatic music, in an original and innovative concert guaranteed to have the entire audience spellbound.

Joining them in this night of mystical Eastern music is Madakto – a Parramatta-based 9-piece ensemble who were the hit of the recent Bellingen Global Carnival. These accomplished Iranian artists play traditional Persian and Kurdish instruments such as the theatrical daf (ring drum), ney (flute), santur (dulcimer), kamancheh (upright violin), tar (lute) and oud (bass lute). This performance will also interlace conga drums beneath the rich traditional rhythms. The band’s evocative sounds will take you on an imaginative journey, with the refined sounds of traditional Persian and Kurdish instrumentation, and their sweet songs and melodies reminiscent of the court of the Persian Kings.

Coupled with the heart-racing thrill of traditional percussion and the adaption of Western influences, Madakto are certain to mesmerise the audience with their unique sound.

This event is part of a diverse series of world music gigs presented by Café Carnivale in 2011 – Sydney’s most talented musicians from all corners of the globe, in 34 amazing events across seven venues in Sydney!
