sunrise over BorobudurAs promised, here are all those details you had no time to jot down:

Borobudur (Central Java, Indonesia) is an amazing Buddhist shrine built in the 9th-century and re-discovered by Sir Stamford Raffles (yes, the one who founded Singapore) in the 19th-century. It had been hidden under volcanic ash and strangling jungle for many centuries. Suffice to say this is one of those places that should be in your ‘bucket list’. Borobodur is the single most visited monument in the whole of Indonesia. Go at sunrise and avoid the crowds.

In a nutshell: Borobudur can be reached from Bali easily. An hour’s flight from Denpasar to Yogyakarta, then a 45 min drive to the Magelan village. Of course you can fly from Sydney to Jakarta and then to Yogyakarta, but why not combine it with Bali? Cheap accommodation abounds in Yogyakarta but, if you want to stay right there in luxury  aim for The Amanjiwo. Absolutely unbeatable.
