Forever French: A Frenchie week for the Sydney Festival
For its second week, Sydney Festival bring a lot of French artists to our city. From Asa’s Afro-beat to Nouvelle Vague’s bossa nova, it will be all about rhythm. Enjoy.
Asa + Fefe : Wednesday 18th, 8 pm, Keystone Festival Bar
Both a modern pop siren and a brooding singer-songwriter, Asa stands well apart from the crowd. She has opened for Beyoncé and sung with Lenny Kravitz, and her latest album, Beautiful Imperfection, is all about irresistible grooves with a nod to 60s soul and funk. Asa’s Afro-beats and feel-good tunes are sure to get everyone up and dancing on the grass.
Fefe is the founding member of iconic French hip hop band Saian Supa Crew who has forged a successful solo career singing home truths with blues, soul, rock and acoustic sounds behind him. On stage Fefe is sometimes explosive, sometimes relaxed, but always driven by the audience and always memorable – as anyone who caught him at WOMADelaide can attest.

Nouvelle Vague + Moriarty : Thursday 19th, 8 pm, Keystone Festival Bar
Nouvelle Vague by now hardly need an introduction. Australia’s favourite troubadours of 80s reinvention will be bringing their Frenchy take on post-punk and new wave classics (from The Sex Pistols to Depeche Mode) back along with songs from their latest album, fronted once again by the irresistible chanteuses, Phoebe Killdeer and Melanie Pain.
Moriarty sounds less French and more Depression era American folk/cabaret, but that’s exactly their thing. This acoustic ensemble, fronted by heartfelt vocals of the enigmatic Rosemary, performs in English with a sound that’s been described as early Neil Young and even Americana.
