Joel Forrester and Phillip Johnston – Live at The Hillside Club

Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week is Live at The Hillside Club by Joel Forrester & Phillip Johnston.

Pianist Joel Forrester and saxophonist Phillip Johnston met in1974 in New York when Joel wandered into Phillip’s apartment after hearing him practice his saxophone from the street. Since then the pair have been pretty much inseparable musically, performing most notoriously in The Microscopic Septet which they co-lead.

However despite playing as a duo for 35 years this is the first time that what they do so often in piano bars and casual sit-in sessions has been put on a record.

Recorded live in Berkeley California at the Hillside club in late 2010 when the two were on tour promoting the latest Microscopic Septet’s album, the LP has only recently been released. Intimate and free flowing, the brotherly bond that Joel and Phillip have adopted over the years is abundantly apparent and is beautifully demonstrated on this rare recording

Phillip is currently a resident in Sydney and you can sometimes catch him perform with The Coolerators and SNAP.

Live at The Hillside Club is a release on Asynchronous Records. For more information go to www.phillipjohnston.com

Stay closely tuned to Eastside as we are giving away a copy of the album to a listener every day this week!
