The New Thing 20/02/12 Playlist & Albums

Here’s what albums were featured on The New Thing today and which tracks were played!

Jeremy Pelt – Soul

The third album by trumpeter Jeremy Pelt on Highnote Records was recorded in a single day. The quintet which also features J.D. Allen on sax, Danny Grissett on piano, Dwayne Bruno on bass and Gerald Cleaver on drums have been together for nearly six years now. Soul has an intimate sound but can also surprise you with some more adventurous tracks.

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘Moondrift’

‘Sweet Rita Suite Part 2: Her Soul’

‘What’s Wrong’s Right’

Etta James – The Dreamer

Etta James had always planned for The Dreamer to be her retirement album. She leans more towards a blues country rock sound on this release, and whilst her voice may not be as strong as it was in her youth, there is still no denying its power. Undoubtedly one of the finest voices of the past century.

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘That’s The Chance You Take’

‘In The Evening’

‘Too Tired’

‘Dreamer’

A Track From Eastside Radio’s Album Of The Week

‘Sun’ by Cal Williams Jr from the album King Billy.

Ulf Wakenius, Lars Danielsson, Vincent Peirani, Youn Sun Nah – Vagabond

Swedish Jazz guitarist Ulf Wakenius is probably best known for his time with the Oscar Peterson Quartet. He describes Vagabond as his best ever work, as he floats jazz with folk, world and country influences. The inclusion of French accordianist Vincent Peirani adds a bit of spice to the flavour.

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘Praying’

‘Message In A Bottle’

‘Psalmen’

‘Witchi – Tai – To’

Independent Track Of The Week

‘Seven Seas’ by Scottley, a Sydney based singer song writer.

Carolina Chocolate Drops – Leaving Eden

North Carolina grammy award winning band Carolina Chocolate Drops have released their second album on Nonesuch Records. Soulful country folk with a blues jazz twist, this is exceptionally fun music to have a jig too.

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘No Man’s Mama’

‘Brigg’s Corn Shucking Jig, Campton Hornpipe’

‘Riro’s House’

‘Leaving Eden’

Be sure to tune in every Monday from 9.00 til 10.30am for your weekly dose of fresh new music!
