Soul Satisfaction

James Muller playing in Smooth Interludes this Thursday at Dome

Words by Elise Annetts

Finding a place to soothe your jazz-loving soul is no longer like looking for a gramophone needle in a haystack. Live jazz has been bubbling away under the surface of the Sydney scene for years and hotspots have been popping up all over town.

Dome Bar in Surry Hills is the latest addition to the list, sharing the talents of local jazz bands every Thursday night. This week, patrons can relax in the stylish cocktail lounge as they soak up sultry tunes supplied by Smooth Standards, featuring Greg Arthur, Craig Scott and James Muller (pictured).

Also in the Surry Hills area is Venue 505 which devotes every night of the week to toe-tapping live jazz. If you’re after something soulful in Glebe, you can catch “intimate candlelit concerts” at Colbourne Ave (formerly known as Cafe Church), or if you’re on the other side of the CBD, Double Bay offers up the rhythmic Blue Beat with an atmosphere sure to get your pulse pumping.

The demand for live jazz is growing in Sydney, which means both above and underground venues will continue to flourish. While you might say you’re happy to listen at home, we all know there’s nothing like the live atmosphere, so why not take the opportunity to experience Sydney’s jazz collection in the flesh?
