In last Wednesday’s Dial Africa show, PJ caught up with Harrison Stafford of Groundation, the roots reggae band whose latest album is a lush arrangement that blends jazz and dub to create a fresh and rich sound. The nine piece has been around in various incarnations since 1998, with Stafford, Ryan Newman and Marcus Urani at the helm. Fourteen years and seven albums later, Stafford says this album, with it’s funk inspired horn lines and heavy Latin and African based polyrhythms combining with their jazz musicianship and reggae spirit mean that ‘Building an Ark’ is an album not to be missed.
