Community Billboard 16-22 April

Reverse Garbage Holiday Kids Program

All through this week, The Reverse Garbage community co-op in Marrickville will be running free workshops for kids as part of their school holiday program. If you haven’t heard of Reverse garbage, they do great work and are committed to reuse, recycling, and sustainable living. They’re a great resource for all kinds of recycled goods for decorating and art projects. Programs are free but spaces are limited.

When: Tuesday 17, Wednesday 18 and Friday 20 April, 11:00am – 12:30pm

Filthy Arts Festival, Maroubra Beach

This Randwick council initiative will provide an opportunity for young people to actively engage with concepts of sustainability (particularly marine pollution and reducing, reusing and recycling) through the creative arts. It features a vibrant and fun-filled program of collective art projects and educational sessions for kids, as well as live music and a skateboarding demonstration.

Public Talk – Innovative Women: Violet McKenzie

Join Sydney City historian Dr. Lisa Murray, as she talks about the life and work of Violet Mckenzie, Australia’s first female electrical engineer, who set up her own electrical contracting business in 1918 and was a lifelong champion of technical education for women in Australia.

Public Talk – Unbuilt Sydney: Visions from the early 20th Century

As part of the Sydney Heritage Festival, Robert Freestone, Professor of planning at UNSW, discusses the narrative of virtual Sydney, the city that could have been. He will look back at the ideas of four urbanists to allow us to reflect on those choices the city did make.

OKA play the ‘My Heart Space’ Festival

With a signature sound & unforgettable live reputation, OKA is a celebration of Australian cultures with a very present, powerful & uniting indigenous cultural overtone running throughout the music. Electrified Didgeridoo, heavy slide guitar, soaring flutes & juju rhythms are some of the many ingredients in this Australian sound that has matured over a decade. They will be joined by The Rhythm Hunters, a hard-hitting band who play an inspired brand of physical drumming blended with tuned wood blocks & bronze percussion.

Photographic Exhibition – Crosby, Stills and Nash
Blender Gallery, the home of rock’n’roll photography in Sydney, hosts an exhibition of photographs of arguably the world’s first ‘supergroup’: Crosby, Stills & Nash. The exhibition is drawn from the collection of prolific music shutterbug Henry Ditz and Graham Nash’s private collection.
