Tim Clarkson – Evolution Of Beauty

Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week is Evolution of Beauty by Tim Clarkson.

Evolution Of Beauty is Sydneysider Tim Clarkson’s second album, but the first on his own Dangerous Music Records imprint. The release features Tim on saxophone, Barney McAll on piano, Hans Glawischnig on bass and Dan Weiss on drums.

The album was quite experimental in it’s creation. The aim was to put together these musicians, who at the time had never rehearsed together, and get them to jam in one single session to create an album. The meeting point was New York, and although the concept was undoubtedly risky, after a singe five and a half hour session, the result was Evolution of Beauty. The name of the album seems all the more appropriate, as the quartet chose to take musical risks in the hope of a natural evolution of sounds.

And the result is fantastic. Evolution of Beauty is a superb piece of modern free flowing jazz with a Manhattan twist and slight nod to the Blues. Moments of vibrancy and fluidity are equally balanced with spaces or pure subtlety and delicacy. It’s exceptionally hard to fathom that there were no rehearsals in the creation of the album!
