Here’s what albums were featured on The New Thing today and which tracks were played!

Jamie Oehlers Quartet Feat. Ari Hoenig – Smoke And Mirrors

Australian tenor saxophonist Jamie Oehlers along with American drumer Ari Hoenig, pianist Tal Cohen and bassist Sam Anning have released a classically inspires, smooth and slightly New York influenced jazz album. Featuring all original compositions by Jamie, Smoke And Mirrors is  a release on the Jazz Head label.

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘Take Me Away’

‘Innocent Dreamer”

‘Smoke And Mirrors’

Sarah Mckenzie – Close Your Eyes

Following on from her ARIA nominated debut album Don’t Tempt Me released last year, Sarah Mckenzie has now released her second album Close Your Eyes. The album is mainly covers, although there are a couple of originals in there too, but once again it’s Sarah’s beautiful and strong vocals which give the release its depth.

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘I Should Care’

‘Close Your Eyes’

‘Don’t Get Around Much Anymore’

A Track From Eastside Radio’s Album Of The Week

‘Golden Slumber’ by The Field from the album Merle Takes A Holiday.

Crystal Barreca – Dreaming

Undoubtedly one of the strongest debuts I have heard in a long while, Crystal Barreca is a local girl who is putting out a unique and fresh sound that blends jazz, gypsy and light pop music with a slight French feel throughout and even at times dabbles in a bit of dub music! For people looking to support local musicians, check out Crystal Barreca now, definitely a rising talent!

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘Broken Cups’

‘Face The Sun’

‘Worlds Collide’

‘Dreaming’

Independent Track Of The Week

‘Little One Brudja’ by T Lynx, who are based in the remote aboriginal community of Ngukurr.

Saskwatch – Leave It All Behind

One of my favourite albums at the moment, Saskwatch are a Melbourne based soul funk band who are putting out fun, dance-able and addictive music. There sound is incredibly infectious, the instrumentation is great and leading vocals from front woman Nkechi Anele are strong but sweet.

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘Smooth Sailing’

‘Don’t Wanna Try’

‘Your Love’

‘Two Hearts’

Be sure to tune in every Monday from 9.00 til 10.30am for your weekly dose of fresh new music!
