The Jamie Oehlers Quartet Featuring Ari Hoenig – Smoke And Mirrors

Eastside Radio’s Album Of The Week is Smoke And Mirrors by The Jamie Oehlers Quartet featuring Ari Hoenig.

Australian tenor saxophonist Jamie Oehlers has returned with Sam Anning on bass, Tal Cohen on piano and celebrated American drummer Ari Hoenig for his latest album.

Smoke And Mirrors is a collection of all original compositions from Jamie, and it sees him continue his exceptionally sophisticated style of jazz music.

The album crosses a broad spectrum of jazz, from slow caressing ballads, to more robust and energetic melodies with virtuoso moments. Some of the drum lines from Hoenig in particular are truly captivating. Hoenig and Oehlers have been performing on and off together for a few years now and it is apparent in their style. The overall result is a richly cultivated album that brims with depth, yet notably is accessible as the quartet manages not to get lost in their interplay.
