Mike Nock & Laurenz Pike – Kindred

Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week is Kindred by Mike Nock & Laurenz Pike.

Australian Jazz legend Mike Nock has been in the scene now for more than half a century and his latest project, Kindred, sees the man born in New Zealand team up with his former student Laurenz Pike.

Pike’s career has been quite different to his former tutor, he is more familiar now with the electronica world, working alongside the likes of Aphex Twin and Flying Lotus.

Kindred, however, sees the two back to their improvisational best together, and the album is certainly not light hearted. Minimal and conceptual, Nock’s piano and Pike’s drums play off one and other to create an intense, emotive and at times quite beautiful experience. Together they are unrestrained, totally free and independent, journeying through harmonic progressions and darker chords.

As these two generations of Australian talent combine, the result is a deep and classically inspired album that sees them delve into the spiritual side of their music.

Kindred is an independent release by Mike Nock on FWM Records. For more information go to mikenock.com
