Mojo Juju – Mojo Juju
Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week is the self-titled album by Mojo Juju.
Having parted ways with The Snake Oil Merchants, the punk swing band she co-formed and was a member of for five years, Mojo Juju’s decision to go it solo was a bold move. This, her debut album, is the fruits of her work since and it seems that her ambitious move has paid off in spades.
The big personality from Newcastle has drawn on 30’s and 40’s inspired blues, jazz and soul music, with a healthy twist of the early Latino Pachuco culture that really adds the zest and bite to Mojo Juju.
The album brims with attitude, style and swagger, as Mojo Juju draws up images of sleazy, swinging saloons and sassy, sinful nightspots. The tempo ranges from moody, slow almost drunken power ballads – most notably the fantastic ‘Pony Takes a Powder’ – to swinging and boozing, rhythm and blues dress swirlers.
The sense of show-womanship and cabaret on the whole album makes Mojo Juju more than just a musical experience, but more of an aural theatrical throwback. All in all it’s smoking hot!
