Experiencing Eastside
By Olivia Grivas
My Eastside FM journey began this morning when I went to the wrong bus stop. I ended up in North Bondi.
My name is Olivia Grivas and I’m doing work experience this week at Eastside FM. I’m in Year 10 at Blue Mountains Grammar School and I live in Wentworth Falls, around two hours away from Sydney and needless to say being a mountains girl means Sydney public transport for me is like Chemistry class; I spend most of my time hopelessly lost.
By the time I finally arrived in Paddington after a hour and a half of public transport catastrophe it was a pleasant surprise to get to Eastside FM and be greeted by a friendly atmosphere, lovely people and speakers playing inviting Jazz music.
I’ve always had a love for music of all kinds and for work experience I wanted something that introduce work that that incorporated music behind the scenes, as opposed to simply making music. I found Eastside FM through doing some googling and after exercising my mouse clicking abilities on their website I decided that Eastside sounded like the place for me.
I consider being involved and giving back to my local community a very important part of my life and in the mountains I often am involved in community events and groups such as my local Youth Council, community theater club and a waste management group so I thought that Eastside FM’s combination between community involvement and gaining experience sounded perfect. Little did I know Eastside FM would welcome me with open arms into such an individual and interesting environment. It certainly beats the legal paper filing and cleaning jobs I know some of my peers will have to endure this week.
In terms of a career choice I have no idea what I want to do after school, not because there’s nothing I want to do, but because I want to do everything. I’m interested in Performing Arts, Film, Music, Journalism, Media and the community and working at Eastside this week seems like the perfect place to help introduce me to a way I can access all of these avenues, provided I can get on the right bus tomorrow.
