Arts Monday – Late Night Library, Destroy the Joint Burlesque

Arts Monday 12th November was hosted by Justine Poon and myself, Maren Smith. Our guests included Leonie, the Library Coordinator for Late Night Library, Tegan Nicholls from Sonic Tales radio play series on Eastside, and Meagan Patroni and Emma Maye, organiser and performer (respectively) of Destroy the Joint Burlesque.

The City of Sydney Late Night Library program of free events in the city’s libraries after dark, has been running with much success in Surry Hills Library and is now expanding to include comedy in Newtown Library, films in King’s Cross Library and talks and events at Custom’s House. The n=first week of comedy at Newtown Library is starting this Wednesday 14th with Never Not Funny!

The full Late Night Library program is on th City of Sydney website or on facebook- https://www.facebook.com/LNLSydney

Sonic Tales has launched it’s third season! Eastside is now the only Sydney radio station to support radio plays and we are very proud of the first class drama that will be echoing through the airwaves. Tegan Nicholls, the sound producer on Eaten, this week’s piece, came on to tell us all about it and the team involved. Details below!

Finally we spoke with Meagan Patroni, director of Aloha Creative, and Emma Maye, burlesque and performance artist also known as Betty Grumble, Iris Mayhem and Vinnie Bradley, who are involved in Destroy the Joint Burlesque, a response to the now infamous Alan Jones comments that women were destroying the joint. We discussed burlesque as a theatre form, concepts of gender and sexuality, performance and shock and how sometimes you have to destroy the joint to rebuild it in a better form.

Destroy the Joint Burlesque, a joint production between Aloha Creative and the Australian Burlesque Calendar, is raising funds for Zonta – the international organisation for advancing the status of women worldwide – is on at The Standard in Surry Hills on 25th November with a whole host of performers and music.
