The New Thing 03/12/12 Playlist & Albums

Here’s what albums were featured on The New Thing today and which tracks were played!

The Andy Sugg Group – The Berlin Session

Andy Sugg is one of Australia’s hidden jazz gems. The man from Melbourne recorded this album with his group last year in Berlin and has just independently released it. All original compositions, the album covers a diverse range of Jazz as Sugg leaves aside his tenor and adopts a soprano sax throughout. The result is and authentic and cohesive sound that sways through moods from busy rippling tracks to more dreamy ballads.

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘Umilita’

‘Vignette’

‘Berlin’

Stan Sulzmann Neon Quartet – Subjekt

English sax man Stan Sulzmann and his Neon Quartet have released their latest album on Edition Records. Another diverse slice of Jazz improv, all but one of the tracks are originals, and the album features some great piano hooks, hammond textures and simmering vibes chords.

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘Buster’s New Tail’

‘Bye Ya’

‘Ruskins Retreat’

A Track From Eastside Radio’s Album Of The Week

‘The Quietening’ by Menagerie from the album They Shall Inherit.

The Olympic Cyclone Band – Season’s Greetings

As today is the start of Eastside’s 12 days of Christmas, this was an incredibly apt new release from The Olympic Cyclone Band to ease us into the season of giving! Featuring an array of classic Christmas tracks all given a funky twist, the album is refreshingly effective and cheery and CRUCIALLY, and I must stress this, not cheesy at all. Well maybe only a teeny tiny bit. But it’s a great one to get you in the mood for those exciting upcoming days!!

Tracks played on The New Thing:

’12 Days Of Christmas’ feat. Stephanie Davis

‘All Is Bright’ feat. Fiona Egan

‘Joy Part III’

‘Away In A Manger’

 Independent Track Of The Week

‘Turn Your Back’ by James Teague from his album Lavender Prayers.

Cal Williams Jr – Honeychild

The new one from the great slide guitar picker, whose previous album King Billy was Album of the Week about a year back. Featuring a few classic covers plus a few twists on some of his own originals it’s a great slice of country blues music.

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘Dark Was The Night’

‘New York Central’

‘Geshe La’

Be sure to tune in every Monday from 9.00am til 10.30am for your weekly dose of fresh new music!
