Pirates – Summer activities

The Rocks Village Bizarre
Draw back the velvet curtain and enter The Rocks Village Bizarre for a Friday night adventure into the weirdly wonderful. Meet peculiar performers, burlesque beauties and a cornucopia of curious characters. Experience a fun, quirky, spontaneous night out as The Rocks’ intimate laneways come alive. Spin some celluloid at the pedal-powered cinema, get down at the silent disco and strut along to a secret hotel room for a peekaboo, car crash, rock star afterparty piece of theatre. Plus, hone your hula hoop skills, hear the hilariously twisted tale of convict butcher George Cribb and head to The Hidden Feast for a decadent yet surreal 10-minute dinner with a yarn-spinning celebrity artist!

Storytime at Vaucluse House Tearooms
Come along to this pre-school interactive storytime set in the beautiful Vaucluse House Tearooms. While the children enjoy a story led by Woollahra Library staff the parents can get to enjoy a Devonshire Tea. Storytime is an opportunity for preschool children aged 3 to 5 and their parents or carers to share the joys of literature, language, rhythm and rhyme set in a beautiful location. Songs, stories and craft booklet included.

Music Presentation: Music by Robert Teicher – Happy Holidays!

Archaeology in the Rocks
Explore archaeological sites in The Rocks and Millers Point, including the ‘Big Dig’, where the foundations of 40 buildings have been incorporated into a modern development, and Parbury Ruins, with the underground remains of an 1820s cottage.
This walking tour explores the history of these sites and includes admission to Susannah Place Museum.

Bush Tucker Walk
This award winning walk takes place in and around Nielsen Park on Saturday 8 December, hosted by the Eastern Suburbs Organisation for Reconciling Australia (ESORA). The walk incorporates Aboriginal culture and education while participants enjoy bush tucker tasting treats along the way. It is suitable for all ages. Steps are involved. This popular event is free, however bookings are essential. Participants should meet at the gate to Greycliffe House, Vaucluse Rd, Vaucluse.

Sing, Dance & Drum with Earthbeats
This is a special interactive musical event for children and their families. There will be singing, dancing and loads of percussion & drumming. Earthbeat’s Suzie Hobday will show you how to sing festive African songs in Swahili, do a Jungle rap, play djembe with Mango Monkey, sing & dance a traditional Aboriginal song, dance and play Merengue and lost more.

Carols on the Bay – HMNAS Watson
The traditional Carols on the Bay, hosted by the Royal Australian Navy and supported by Woollahra Council, will be held on the magnificent grounds of HMAS Watson, Watsons Bay on Saturday 8 December 2012.
Local area Sydneysiders are welcome to the base overlooking Sydney Harbour to share the Christmas spirit. There will be carols and music from the RAN Band, a special appearance from Santa, as well as food stalls, a mobile petting farm, a sausage sizzle and kids entertainment.
Local school students will sing a number of songs before the Navy Band takes to the stage, performing a selection of traditional carols and modern Christmas songs. There will also be a marching display, and a special ceremonial sunset where a volley of blank cartridges will be fired.
Gates open from 3.30pm and will finish with a Ceremonial Sunset at 8pm. Come along to this fantastic community event for a great night out for the entire family.

Newtown “Write for Rights Event”
Each year more than millions of individuals take part in Amnesty International’s annual letter writing marathon! Together we write letters to and on behalf of, people at risk of or suffering human rights violations. This year the Newtown Amnesty group will be focusing on the case of Nasrin Sotoudeh, a human rights lawyer and mother of two who is serving six years’ imprisonment in Tehran as a result of her peaceful human rights work. Join us at this free public event, write a letter or sign an aerogram and add your voice to thousands of others standing up for human rights around the world.

Storytime with Mr Palindrome – Double Bay
The Double Bay Library invites pre-school aged children to come along to the last Storytime for 2012 with Mr. Palindrome on Monday 10 December. Mr. Palindrome loves to sing silly songs and has an unbelievable knack to make you never forget his melodies, he sings from both his heart and his toes. Please note that food will be served at this event. Rhyme Time for 2012 will conclude on Friday 14 December. All Children’s Programs (Rhyme Time & Storytime) will not run during January. Programs will restart on Monday 4 February 2013.

The folks who’ve brought laughs to Late Night Library at Surry, Harvest Festival, Peats Ridge Festival, Sydney Comedy Festival and more are gathering the best and brightest in alternative and emerging comedy to tear the roof off Newtown Library with a laughter explosion. Sit back, relax and take in a healthy dose of mirth as the laughter monster splits you sides with a fast and furious giggle-fest.
