The New Thing 17/12/12 Playlists & Albums

Here’s what albums were featured on The New Thing today and which tracks were played!

Steve Barry – Steve Barry

Launched at 505 last Friday, pianist Steve Barry has released his debut self titled album on Jazzgroove. Originally from New Zealand but now based in Sydney, his album also features Alex Boneham on bass and Tim Firth on drums. Vibrant with great rhythmic interplay, it’s a classy first release.

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘Sparse’

‘Parks’

A Track From Eastside Radio’s Album For Christmas

‘Quest Under Capricorn’ by The Shaolin Afronauts from the album Quest Under Capricorn.

Murphy’s Law – Big Creatures & Little Creatures

Alternative jazz this one, Bassist Tamara Murphy had the album funded after winning the PBS Young Elder of Jazz Commission last year. Featuring guitars, bass, trombone, drums and electronic soundscapes, the sound sways between alt jazz, alt classical and post rock. Both smooth and ambient, whilst also glitched and moody, it’s a unique and thought provoking experience.

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘A Song For Two Rivers’

‘Building Castles With The Tiniest Grains’

Oisima – Goddess EP

Oisima for me is one of a handful of Australian producers who you should really keep an eye on. His latest EP Goddess sees him really start to capture and assert his own sound, flowing between hip hop and trip hop beats, lush samples and ambient grooves. The track ‘Glow’ featuring Adam Page on Sax is an absolute stunner, if you’re into your Flume and Chet Faker you NEED to check out this man!

Tracks played on The New Thing:

‘Glow’

‘Seven Bells’

‘Hardtime Delights’

‘Where The Light Is’

Independent Track Of The Week

‘Armani Slums’ by Electric Sea Spider
