Sounds Of Soul chronicles and playlist: 11 January – A letterbox full of wax
The life of a Soul tragic and vinyl addict like me if full of hardship but it’s also got some rewards. Whilst most people dread the day they have to return to their everyday life after the summer holidays I felt the thrill of anticipation coming home knowing that there will be some new wax pilling up in the letterbox. It was almost like a second vinyl themed Christmas in mid January with all that unwrapping of seven and twelve inch parcels, particularly if such a packet contains a New York Disco nugget like Wil Collins & WillPower’s Anything I Can Do on the Bareback label, a record I was perusing for a long time now. It’s one of these tracks that crossed over from its Disco origins to the British Northern Soul scene, being championed by legendary DJ Richard Searling as a Love Committee cover up. Said group was represented in the letterbox as well with a nice twelve inch on the T-electric label with the great I Made A Mistake on it. Other latest additions to the collection are Gloria Scott’s What Am I Gonna Do on Casablanca and the previously unissued 7ts Soul gem Don’t Pop The Question (If You Can’t Take The Answer by Oliver Cheatham on Soul Junction. All this new wax got strait into the box for my first Sounds Of Soul radio show in 2013 and here’s the list of all records played that evening:
