New skills for a new year: AFTRS Open short courses for radio, TV and film enrolling now

Do you love Film and want to find out more about movie classics? Or was your New Year’s resolution to learn some new skills? AFTRS OPEN, the short course program of the prestigious Australian Film Television and Radio School in Sydney, could be the answer.

This March, AFTRS OPEN launches Alice Tynan’s Film Club, an opportunity to learn about classic movies with one of Australia’s leading film critics. Run online, for 8 weeks from 21 March Alice (pictured below) will assign films for viewing which, followed by a weekly chat session. The theme of the first Film Club is “First Timers” – a look at the debut movies by acclaimed directors, including Wes Anderson’s Bottle Rocket (1996), Spike Lee’s She’s Gotta Have it (1986), Baz Luhrman’s Strictly Ballroom (1992) and Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane (1941). AFTRS OPEN also runs a series of 1- 2 day introductory Film, TV and Radio courses at AFTRS state-of-the-art studios at the Entertainment Quarter, Moore Park, including:

– Introduction to Television, a 1-day introduction to the structure of the TV Industry today. Focused on the different production models and jobs within the industry, the course is designed to help with “where to start” and “how to progress” your career. (Click here for more info)

– The Director’s Toolkit, designed for emerging directors, actors, writers, and producers, including working with professional actors and the application of concepts and tools in a progressive and insightful way (2 – 3/9-10 Mar). (Click here for more info)

– Introduction to Producing,  endeavours to help answer: what does a Producer do? This introductory, one-day course  (20/4) with Martin Brown, producer of Moulin Rouge and co-producer of Romeo+Juliet, explains the role and workflow of a producer and explores the effective production of film projects. (Click here for more info)

– Two-day course Introduction to Screenwriting (6-7/4), providing all the writing tools, as well as the opportunity for feedback on your movie ideas and on a scene of your choice. (Click here for more info)

If radio is more your thing, the five-day intensive Introduction to Radio offers essential skills from experienced industry professionals, discussing roles and responsibilities, announcing, presentation, editing and studio skills. (Click here for more info)

Similarly, Radio Announcing and Presentation, a practical course on live presentation, announcing and script reading, selecting and preparing radio content, voice skills, professional on air studio equipment, and broadcast law, is constructed to provide essential skills to move forward as a presenter. (Click here for more info)
