Sounds Of Soul chronicles and playlist (8.2.2013): Genre fusion or confusion
One of the challenges of hosting a radio show like Sounds Of Soul is what to say about the selected records without boring the listener with tedious monologues. Beside short biographical facts and the context of a record in music history I tend to specify the music genre of a tune and as I’m operating in the wide field of Afro-American music this can be quite confusing. I’m talking about genres like Modern Soul, which is often quite old music from the 1970s, or Northern Soul, which is up-tempo dance tunes popular in the North of England and not as one may assume something originating from the North of the USA. Another example is Crossover Soul, which refers not to Soul music that crossed over from the Afro-American charts to the wider white audiences, it’s rather a genre name used for tunes that are not quite Modern Soul but not as danceable as Northern Soul. Confused? Don’t worry; even people supposedly in the know like yours truly struggle to totally comprehend the indistinct world of Soul talk.
