Marialy Pacheco – Spaces Within
Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week is Spaces Within by Marialy Pacheco.
Cuban pianist made Brisbane her home back in 2009, and Spaces Within marks her first trio album (although her fourth overall) since she graced us on these shores. And how lucky we are to have such a talent amongst us!
In July last year Marialy became the first woman to be awarded 1st place at the Montreux Jazz solo piano competition. A tremendous talent, Spaces Within sees her team up with brothers Joe and Pat Marchisella on drums and bass, and the result is an album where Pacheco shows off her fantastic improvisational and mood swinging range.
There is passion in her play. Vibrant and testing times are counterbalanced with intimate and sublime moments. Whilst Pacheco’s piano is undoubtedly the star of the show, the bass and drums of the Marchisella brothers are eloquently intuitive, adding a further finesse to the album that wouldn’t have existed if it were a solo project.
Drawing on the classical side of Jazz music, tumbling keys and melodies excite whilst delicate and flowing lines delight. It’s an album that seduces you as you go on, and it’s another highlight on a career that has all the potential to fully flourish.
