Sounds Of Soul chronicles and playlist (22.3.2013): Price guide blues
I’m not a big fan of those price guides for vintage vinyl records anyhow, but after ignoring the last couple of editions I decided to order the most recent issue of the most comprehensive one, in order to have a up to date point of reference. The problem with these guides is that that the guys who publish these are record dealers who have an interest to tweak values to their own advantage for obvious reasons. One would expect that prices for those precious discs are consistently rising over the years, given the unavoidable wear and tear of vinyl and the fact that there are more collectors out there than ever, and so far this proved true. Now you can imagine my astonishment when I checked a couple of my more valuable treasures of wax only to find out that some had significantly lost value since I last had a price guide in my hand. I have no explanation for this strange development and to be honest I don’t even want to know, so I chucked the evil book in the corner where it will gather dust just like the earlier editions. In the end records are here to be played and the real value is in the music pressed on those discs.
