Sounds Of Soul chronicles and playlist (04.04.2013): Unlisted pleasures
I always intend to trust my ears and my own taste rather than follow trends or forage other DJs playlists when I look for new material for the radio show or my collection. Maybe that’s why I’ve got a couple of records that I championed over the years that have been flying under the radar in the wider Rare Soul community and have been hardly mentioned in any internet forums, books or even price guides for vinyl. Some of these so called “unlisted” gems became eventually quite popular and I like to think that this was my doing, rightly or not. On the other hand there are those tunes that I flog for a long time now and never gained any traction whatsoever, which hints that I might overestimate my influence. Be that as it may, I’m a pretty stubborn kind of fellow and I keep trying, especially with such underrated treasures like L C Grier’s Gone Is The Laughter – the last track in last weeks playlist at Sounds Of Soul radio show:
