The Catholics – Yonder
Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week is Yonder by The Catholics.
A dream team of Aussie Jazz musicians, The Catholics are lead by Lloyd Swanton on acoustic bass and also feature Gary Daley on piano accordian, Sandy Evans on Sax, James Greening on trombone, Fabian Hevia on percussion, Jon Pease on guitar and Hamish Stuart on drums.
Daley’s inclusion actually marks his debut in the group, replacing slide guitarist Bruce Reid. The addition of the accordion adds a whole new element to the band, with keys for extra harmonies and wind for further texture. It’s a very welcome sound, and whilst a bold move, was one that The Catholics mastered successfully as one would expect.
Yonder is the eighth album from the group and it sees the Catholics continue their explosive interplay between each other. They organically blend jazz, afro roots, gypsy swing and reggae folk to name but a few of the genres, yet what makes the group so easy to listen and indeed so successful is how seamlessly and easily they fuse the sounds. Not once does it seem jilted or over pretentious, the sound is always smooth and succinct, indeed an unmistakable vibe that could only be created by this group of talented musicians. Equally groovy, chilled and exotic, Yonder continues to affirm The Catholics as one of Australia’s most prominent fusion jazz groups.
Yonder is a release by Bugle Records through Fuse Distribution. For more information go to buglerecords.com
