Nat Bartsch Trio – To Sail, To Sing
Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week is To Sail, To Sing by The Nat Bartsch Trio.
Pianist and composer Nat Bartsch leads a young trio from Melbourne and is joined by Tom Lee on bass (Michelle Nicolle Quartet) and Daniel Farrugia on drums (Luke Howard Trio, Murphy’s Law).
Nat Bartsch’s previous accolades include winning the prestigious 2010 Melbourne prize for Music Development Award, and To Sail, To Sing was also funded by a successful Pozible campaign a couple of months back.
Citing Andrea Keller, Tony Gould and Paul Grabowsky amongst her Australian inspirations, as well as indie pop groups Elbow and Sigur Ros, all these musical influences become apparent upon listening to To Sail, To Sing.
The album is quite simply stunningly beautiful. A combination of original compositions plus a couple of pop covers from the likes of Radiohead and Gotye, Nat crosses minimal jazz music with her own indie jazz style with spine tingling resolve. The whole release is a blissfully light and serene experience reminiscent of the European great Tord Gustavsen with whom Nat has worked with in the past.
A perfect album to mellow out with and really melt in to , Nat Bartsch is a highly promising talent to keep your eyes on.
