Sounds Of Soul chronicles and playlist (26.04.2013): Soul vs. Soul

There are a couple of divides among the dedicated Soul aficionados, commonly called Soulies, when it comes to sub-genres of the music they are so passionate about. This diverse community of deejays, collectors and dancers often get into heated arguments about the relevance of certain periods and styles of Soul music, roughly separated by the fault-lines defined by the genres of Northern, Crossover and Modern Soul. I could never quite comprehend this petty squabbling that more or less divides fans of 1960s Soul from those who love the stuff produced in the 1970s and onwards, because to me and everyone else who really listens to these sounds would realize how blurred the differences between these subgenres are to start with. For me it’s totally incomprehensible that some Soulies assume that a musical genius like Curtis Mayfield for example turned into a tasteless and untalented moron just because the date changed from 31.12.1969 to 1.1.1970. It’s only natural that some prefer one to the other period or genre but to dismiss one type completely is quite disrespectful towards the artists.
