505 International Jazz Festival brings the world to Surry Hills

Venue 505 is introducing new groups to Sydney with the 505 International Jazz Festival, held in collaboration with the Melbourne Jazz Festival and Perth International Jazz Festival. Having kicked off on Monday 20th with Nate Wood (USA), groups from the USA and Austria will be playing at the venue until Wednesday 12 June 2013.

Kneebody-Light-PaintOn Wednesday 29 May: Kneebody (USA: Adam Benjamin – keyboards, Shane Endsley – trumpet, Ben Wendel – tenor sax, Kaveh Rastegar – bass, Nate Wood – drums). At the vanguard of genre-bending postmodern music, the group combines the depth of jazz with the swagger of hip-hop and the conviction of rock to create a truly singular voice.

On Thursday 30 May, renowned jazz bassist Christian McBride (USA) will play with his trio (Christian Sands – piano, Ulysses Owens Jr. – drums). With deep respect for the jazz tradition and irrepressible creativity McBride and his trio are masterful exponents of the sort of feel-good enlightenment once routinely expected of modern jazz. Following their session there will also be a late set by the Australian group, The Grid (Tim Jago – guitar, Dane Alderson – Bass, Ben Vanderwal – drums).

Tony MalabyThursday 6 June will see the appearance of the American powerhouse tenor saxophonist Tony Malaby with his long-time collaborator, Australian alto player Dave Ades. The two saxophonistsare set to deliver an engaging and explosive one night only jazz performance backed by two of the finest Australian musicians, Simon Barker on drums and Cameron Undy on bass.

The Festival will close on Wednesday 12 June with the David Helbock Trio from Austria. Innovative and ground breaking, the Trio is fast earning a reputation amongst the global music David Helbock triocommunity as an act of note, and this will be their only Sydney performance.  One of the most exciting piano players to emerge on theEuropean jazz scene in recent times David heads a trio that includes Raphael Preuschi on bass and Herbert Pirker on drums.
