Topology – Ten Hands Album Tour

TopologyA group of five virtuoso composers and musicians, each a success in their own right and combined to form the company Topology.

The band includes John Babbage on saxophone, Robert Davidson on bass, Bernard Hoey on viola, Christa Powell on violin and Therese Milanovic on piano. Artists in residence at Brisbane Powerhouse they are undaunted by stylistic barriers.

Over 16 years they have created a formidable list of projects with collaborations spanning theatre, contemporary art and jazz, ballet, comedy, popular songwriting, asian and indigenous Australian music.

Their collaborators ranging from Geoffrey Rush and The Queensland Ballet to The Kransky Sisters, Dheeraj Shrestha and Kate Miller-Heidke. Touring the world from Canada to Indonesia, Holland and many places in between has seen Topology play a long list of festivals and work with many leading Australian and international composers.

After 4 years of development they are now celebrating their 10th album, Ten Hands. The ethos of the album being in the name. The new album is a continuous one hour piece of music that seamlessly combines each individuals imaginations and ideas.

Recorded and mixed by Magoo at his Applewood Lane Studios and mastered by Dave McNeil. The album was formed through intensive rehearsals in which they would record their improvisations to later listen back to and mine for their best ideas. These would then become the inspiration and foundation for the next jam session.

At the core of Ten Hands is the concept of communication. Through this cycle of improvisation and composition they have created an album that achieves what bassist Robert Davidson commented was an aim to “make a piece with the whole group, to have the piece very much generated together, to make this one long journey”.

Topology 2

In celebration of the album’s official release Topology have announced gigs across the east coast. Ten Hands – The Show was a conscious decision to create a “theatrical experience”. As always they have drawn from their individual and collective experiences and now to work with long time collaborator, renowned performance artist and director Annie Lee, to bring Ten Hands to life on stage. Derived from their experience in musical fields as disparate as chamber music, progressive rock, jazz and indie, the show is powerful, moving, playful, and meditative, packaged up with dramatic staging, and topped with a bow of beautiful lighting.
