Arts Friday 23/8 – Tele Visions, John Fries Prize and Light Maps
Analog television is switched off, 22 emerging artists have a chance at $10,000 and a debut solo show that is all paper, repetition and form, on today’s Arts Friday hosted by Maren Smith.
Alex White, Sebastian Goldspink and Bianca Chang are today’s guests on Arts Friday 23rd August 10:30am-12:00pm.
First up, Alex White, co-director of Tele Visions, a live art broadcast and festival to commemorate the switching off of analog television this year on December 3rd. We talk about the death of television and analog media, the show planned with an online and short range analog broadcast and exhibition. Tele Visions is on at Performance Space at Carriageworks as part of You’re History between 20th November and 1st December, and the call for works which closes in a week’s time!

Alex White also has an exhibition on presently at Firstdraft Gallery called Slight Lull, in which video works self generate electromagnetic based images. Alex has a soundcloud page in which you can hear some of his work.

My second guest is Sebastian Goldspink, artist and director of Alaska Projects who is curating the 2013 John Fries Memorial Prize for Emerging Visual Artists which is in its fourth year this year. The 22 finalists from Australia and New Zealand are showing from tomorrow at the Gaffa Gallery and the winner of the $10,000 prize will be announced on Tuesday 27th at the opening party.

Sebastian Goldspink also founded and is director of Alaska Projects, the artist run initiative in a carpark in King’s Cross which has hosted many of the finalists among other talented emerging and established artists. We chat about this and about the Sydney emerging and ARI art scene.

My final guest, Bianca Chang, opened her debut solo exhibition Light Maps at A-M Gallery in Newtown last week. Her clean three dimensional images formed from layers of paper cut by hand. Light Maps combining mathematical principles, architectural and design forms and the tangibility of time spent in practiced repetition.

Bianca Chang works as a design teacher at UTS and has worked both in design and as a practicing artist, we discuss the (imagined) distinction between the two objectives and her experience of the process of creation of these time consuming and beautiful works.
